Let's circle back to Prohibition.

When that fiasco started people had to hide when they wanted a drink. And from the sounds of it they wanted to drink A LOT. Serving as a concealed way to do so, meeting places were created.

To get into these hideouts passwords or special knocks were needed. Once inside bartenders would tell everyone to 'speak easy' (quietly) when ordering so as not to draw attention.

Today, we've brought back the Speakeasy for a much more enjoyable reason.

They are still somewhat hidden in plain sight. They still require a codeword or perhaps an identified object to gain entrance.

Usually the cocktails are more unique, like a special treat for finding your way in.

Vancouver has a number of Speakeasies scattered throughout the city. Each with their own theme or vibe.
